German Shepherds Are Athletic!
If you are an athlete or have an active athletic
family, a German Shepherd is the dog for
you! The breed is known for its strength,
endurance and overall athleticism. They
can run with speeds well over 30 miles
per hour (the fastest clocked at 39.4
mph). There
are many dog
sports and activities you and members
of your family can participate together
with your athletic dog.
German Shepherds Are Loyal!
German Shepherds derive comfort,
security and motivation from their
humans. German Shepherds often refuse to
leave their human’s side. There are
countless reports of loyal German
Shepherds who stayed beside their human
owners and handlers
when they were sick, injured and even
deceased.
German Shepherds Are Highly Intelligent!
German Shepherds are among the
smartest of all canine breeds.
A German Shepherd enjoys learning. German
Shepherds look to their humans for
guidance and fulfilling their needs. Obedience training is excellent for
both you, your family, and your dog. Proper training teaches them to be constructive members of your family.
German shepherds are smart. Really smart! These dogs will have your
routine figured out before you do. Their high intelligence makes them eager to please.
German Shepherds Require Mental Stimulation!
Well bred German Shepherds are a working
breed and need a job to accomplish. They must have their minds occupied
constructively or they can get into trouble
by creating their own work that is often destructive.
They are extremely sensitive to human moods;
the reason why they make
great
service, emotional support, and therapy dogs.
German Shepherds Are High Energy!
As a herding dog, German Shepherds require adequate exercise. if
they aren't doing activities to utilize
their energy, they may find other energy
outlets sometimes resulting in negative behaviors
as digging, chewing or other destructive
conduct.
As Working Dogs, they love to work and need jobs to do,
or they may devise ways to use their energy
you may not appreciate!
German Shepherds Bond To Their Owners!
German Shepherds are pack-dogs and
are devoted and loyal. They will bond to
their pack-family. Just because they love
their family does not mean they will love
strangers. These dogs are aloof to those
they do not know. They are naturally
protective of their homes and families. If
not trained or socialized properly, they can
growl or scare other people and other dogs
in their "guardian-protection mode." Sometimes
they pick one person in their pack-family as their special person, yet they can relate well to all members of
their family household pack.
German Shepherds Love To Chew!
A puppy starts to chew at the age of three to eight weeks. This is the time when your puppy is developing teeth, a process known as teething.
Their baby teeth are often called "milk teeth" and very sharp. During the teething period, a puppy will chew on almost anything that it finds. However, if the puppy is not stopped
when mature, it will adopt chewing as a habit.
German Shepherds Are Sociable Dogs!
German Shepherds need attention and companionship. They do not
thrive if confined or left in isolation from people and other companion animals. These herding dogs cannot be left chained or
kenneled for long periods of time.
German Shepherds Are Protective!
German Shepherds make great
loyal watchdogs.
They will protect all members of their pack
family. Their owners will experience little
privacy including their bedrooms and
bathrooms because the breed is always on
patrol and guardian mode. They are loyal, brave
and fearless
companions.
German Shepherds Require A Sound
Temperament!
A sound temperament is important in having a good
family member and companion. Temperament is inherited, and a direct result of the dog's breeding. There are
too many German Shepherds
bred that do not have good temperaments and
give the breed a bad name.
Temperament
should never be confused with
socialization
or character.
German Shepherds Can Live Long Lives!
When properly cared for, a healthy German Shepherd
has a lifespan usually 10 years or more.
Their life expectancy should be a
consideration as this breed requires a long commitment for ownership.
German Shepherds Have Many Colors!
There are many different and distinct colors of German Shepherd coats including bi-color, black, white, black and cream, black and red, black and silver, black and tan, blue, grey, liver, and sables
(Agouti) of different mixed colors.
German Shepherds Shed!
According to the AKC (American Kennel Club) German Shepherd Breed standard, a German Shepherd will have a double coat of medium length. Medium haired and Plush coats are
common as well as long haired or Coated German Shepherds.
Both should have undercoats, but sometimes do not. They continually shed and completely lose their coats several times a year. Plan to brush your dog often and always have a good vacuum cleaner available for hair.
German Shepherds Think With Their Nose!
A German Shepherd Dog's predominant sense is smell.
Their olfactory
glands easily detect odors well over 250X that of a human.
As a Search and Rescue Dog, this trained scent dog can easily trace
the origin of scents regardless of location. Sometimes it's a little
embarrassing when your dogs check out guests and visitors to your
home.
German Shepherds Are One Often Preferred By Police and
Military!
Whether apprehending armed suspects or finding
bombs and narcotics,
GSD's are among the most preferred breeds for use by
police and military. This is because the breed is intelligent, loyal, fearless,
and confident with sound nerves.
German Shepherd Dogs Are Versatile!
A German Shepherd Dog is a "Jack of All Trades." The German Shepherd
Dog is the "Swiss Army Knife" breed of dogs. It is often said that
no other dog breed can do so many different things well. Several other
dog breeds may do one or more specific tasks better, but no single
dog breed is as versatile and can perform the widest variety of tasks overall as well as
the German Shepherd Dog.

Main Distinct Different Lines/Types of the German Shepherd Dog
There are strengths and weaknesses of each of the distinct
different lines/types of dogs depending on the desired use of a
German Shepherd dog. Unfortunately, subjective personal
preferences, likes and dislikes as well as kennel blindness can
enter into the discussions of lines/types of dogs. French's
German Shepherds appreciates this diversity. We embrace and
promote the "Total Dog" and strive to breed multipurpose,
multidisciplined German Shepherd Dogs for both show and
performance.

Black German Shepherds
A completely black German shepherd dog is a
result of color and pattern (i.e. where the
color appears on the dog’s body) being
genetically expressed in a dog. These black
genes are recessive. Two dogs of different
colors may have recessive genes for black
and whelp a black puppy. Two black dogs will
whelp black puppies. Black GSDs are within
the standards of AKC. The black GSD will
have the same kind of temperament as any
other GSD. There are no particular health
problems associated with the black color.
Globally, 6.8% of German Shepherds are
all-black (and a total of 88% are at least
partly black). In North America, 7.7% are
all-black, and in Europe 3.4%. But in
Australia and in Asia next to none are
all-black! For this reason and because of
some popular misconceptions about them as
being better somehow, the price of a black
German shepherd puppy can run anywhere from
double to triple that of the more common
colors like black and tan. A black German
Shepherds is often priced in the low
thousands range.

German Shepherd Dogs Are A Very Special Breed!
The German Shepherd Dog is one of the most popular dog breeds in the
world. Actually, the German Shepherd Dog is the 2nd most popular
breed in the United States. The Breed is popular because of its
strength, agility, athleticism, hardiness, intelligence, enhanced
hearing and scent abilities, trainability and obedience. A German
Shepherd Dog is a loyal, devoted faithful working dog and companion.
The German Shepherd Dog is virtually unsurpassed in its working
versatility of any other breed. They are utilized as Service Dogs
specifically trained to help people who have disabilities: as people
who have sight impairments or are blind (Seeing Eye Dogs), people
with hearing impairments, mental illness, seizures, diabetes, and
autism. Their intelligence makes them well-suited for Emotional
Support especially for people suffering
from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
(PTSD), and general purpose Therapy Dogs.
German Shepherds are working dogs. They excel as
herding and farm dogs,
military and police dogs, attack and
protection dogs, security, guard and
watch dogs. Their enhanced scent ability
is used for cadaver location, search and
rescue, narcotics, and/or bomb detection.
Medical researchers have discovered
Germans Shepherds and other enhanced
canine sniffers can even detect and smell
cancer! Originally bred for herding, this
breed makes great companions, and of
course, family pets.
