What Is ACT?
The Agility Course Test (ACT) is a beginning entry level agility event designed to introduce and welcome beginning dogs and their handlers to the AKC sport of agility.
It is a great way for owners to bond with their dogs and teach discipline. In addition to demonstrating their dog’s entry level skills, handlers will now learn
some of the sport’s basics like how to fill out an AKC entry form, check-in at the ring, take their dog in and out of ring, handle their dog while being judged
and other skills that will help them when they move on to AKC agility trials with their dog. There are two levels of ACT events – ACT1 and ACT2.

A German Shepherd Dog Is An
Athlete, Are You?
Agility is a growing dog sport in the United States, with over 1 million entries to the AKC’s Agility Program each year.
Dogs race against a clock as they navigate an obstacle course with strong concentration and speed. Whether you just want to have fun exercising with your dog,
or want to go further and enter an Agility competition, get ready for a fast-paced, rewarding experience that will get you and your dog in the best shape of your lives!
Dog Agility is a sport where you direct your dog through a pre-set obstacle course within a certain time limit. Courses typically have between 14-20 obstacles, which can include tunnels, weave poles, tire jumps, seesaws, and pause tables where the dog must stop for a set amount of time. At each trial you and your dog will race around the unique courses designed for that day. All of this is done with your dog relying solely on the cues and body language you use to direct them on course.
If you are an athlete or have an active athletic family, a German Shepherd is the dog for you! The breed is known for its strength, endurance and overall athleticism. They can run with speeds well over 30 miles per hour (the fastest clocked at 39.4 mph). Agility is a sport you and members of your family can participate together with your athletic dog. There is a Junior Program for children under the age of 18 too!
Is Agility Right for You
and Your Dog?
Assess your dog’s temperament to be sure he’s right for Agility: Is
your dog highly energetic and are you physically fit? Does your dog
enjoy running, jumping and responding to instruction? Does your dog
get along well with other dogs? Training doesn’t only involve your
dog, it involves you! You don’t need to be a world class sprinter to
do agility with your dog. Through training and the development of
good communication you and your dog can become part of the sport of
Agility.
