Misinformation, superstition and myths certainly exist concerning Black German Shepherd Dogs and there is mystique perception of them. The Black German Shepherd is NOT a different breed than the German Shepherd. Black German Shepherds are well within Breed Standards (unlike White German Shepherds except in the UKC). In a litter, black German Shepherd puppies are born black and will remain black through adulthood. Both parents do not need to be totally black, however both parents must have at least the recessive black color gene and pass it to their offspring.
A completely black German shepherd dog is a
result of color and pattern (i.e. where the
color appears on the dog’s body) being
genetically expressed in a dog. These black
genes are recessive or dominant. Two dogs of different
colors may have recessive genes for black
and whelp a black puppy. Two black dogs will
usually whelp black puppies. Black GSDs are within
the breed standards of numerous dog
registries. The black GSD can
have the same kind of temperament as any
other GSD. There are no particular health
problems associated with the black color.
Globally, 6.8% of German Shepherds are
all-black (and a total of 88% are at least
partly black). In North America, 7.7% are
all-black, and in Europe 3.4%. But in
Australia and in Asia next to none are
all-black! For this reason and because of
some popular misconceptions about them as
being better somehow, the price of a black
German shepherd puppy is usually priced
higher and can sometimes be
priced from double to triple that of the
more common colors as black and tan.
Black German Shepherds
can have the same types of coats and
textures as other
German Shepherds. They can have the same
temperaments and are just as smart as
German Shepherds of different colors. Black Germans
Shepherds generally are prone to the same health
issues as the rest of the breed. They are
stealth-like in the dark and often can be
seen easier in the light. To some, an all
black German Shepherd is perceived to be
more scary and intimidating, They can be
from Show and Working Lines and from
different lines types from different respective countries. As a
plus, they often win in Conformation
because of the intensity of their sharp
silhouette outlines. However, in
Conformation, even the slightest
imperfection can be a negative because
even the slightest minor imperfections
are easy to notice and
appear to stand out
on a completely black German Shepherd.
Our friend Trevor Maroshek, handler and owner of the famous "SEAL Dog Chopper," and founder of the SEAL Dog Foundation was looking for a quality female to start a Working Dog "Chopper Line." The first litter from Roxy DeLisi whelped a Show Line all black female "Ada (aka Tequila)." Then Corsair's German Shepherds donated an all black well bred quality male, "Knight Rider" to the SEAL Dog Foundation encouraging his use in a breeding program. "Rider" was placed through the SEAL Dog Foundation with a disabled veteran, and is living in our locale and being trained as a Service Dog. In addition we were able to obtain an all-black DDR (East German) working line female German Shepherd for our breeding program. Her name is Venus call name "Lulu." Lulu has passed of OFA health tests for hips and elbows and is clear of 216 genetic health dispositions on her DNA Wisdom Panel.
Venus (aka Lulu)
Starting are own unique line within our breeding philosophy and standards has taken planning and research. Researching pedigrees for genetic potential and obtaining the health, type, drive and quality of proven parents of dogs for this line required intensive planning and research. The majority of breeders contacted were not a good fit with us. This planning required developing new breeder partnerships with honesty and integrity that were consistent and in agreement with our philosophies and goals. It has included multi-generational planning and another important dynamic known as "Breeder Responsibility and Trust." "Breeder responsibility to other breeders is just as important as breeder responsibility to the public." - Master Breeder Patricia Craige Trotter
Developing a plan, establishing our own bloodline, and then obtaining Black German Shepherd females for our desired potential was more difficult than imagined. We already had an American Show Line female and a quality potential sire for our test breedings. What was needed required two more females - an East German (DDR) Working Line female, and another female which required an in-depth search, investigation and study of the pedigree potential and aptitude testing of possible females.
We have completed our Black German Shepherd Working Dog Line planning stages. We believe we have found them! We have our first DDR female already placed. They have already passed their DNA and OFA health checks. We have established that timeframe to see if they are worthy breeding material and have what it takes and get them titled. We remember the words of Master Breeder Patricia Craige Trotter, "When you look at an animal's pedigree, it tells you what it ought to be. When you look at an animal performing in the ring or some other event, it tells you what it seems to be. When you look at an animal's offspring and producing record, it tells you what it is." Only after each dog has met our Breeding Philosophy, Title and Health Criteria will we even consider breeding to the famous SEAL Dog Chopper. SEAL Dogs are highly trained, obedient and love to fight.
